Bio

Brayden was born in Sequim and has spent the past ten years growing through the Boy Scouts. He’s now working toward his Eagle Scout rank, with a project that reflects his heart for service: building a producewashing station for the Sequim Food Bank.

As his class treasurer, Brayden has discovered a real interest in managing money responsibly, which is why he plans to attend Washington State University to study finance. The choice is especially meaningful to him, since it’s also his father’s alma mater.

From the time he was little, Brayden’s parents taught him that helping others was simply part of who he should be. That is how he became a volunteer at the Sequim Food Bank. Brayden became the youngest person to receive the Junior Volunteer of the Year Award at the age of 13. Through his work at the food bank, Brayden has seen firsthand how many families in our community struggle to keep food on the table. That experience inspired him to make food insecurity the heart of his platform.

My name is Paisley, and I am 9 years old. I’m in Mrs. Ellefson’s 3 rd grade class at Helen Haller. My parents are Christine and Nelson, and I have a brother named Wyatt. In my free time, I love riding horses and dirt bikes because they make me feel adventurous. I also like traveling and visiting new places like national parks. I play soccer and am part of the 4-H program, where I will be showing a pig. My favorite subject in school is PE because I like running and my teacher plays fun games. When I grow up, I want to own my own coffee stand and run my own business.

Essay:

When I pass by the big chicken in the field, I know I’ve made it to Sequim. I see all the beautiful trees and the great big Olympic mountains. The fist thing that comes to my mind is hiking, so I head to the Voice of America. There, I see beautiful shells, feel the waves splashing on my feet and spot the Dungeness Lighthouse. These trails are always filled with people visiting from all over the world. After hiking for a little bit, I feel hungry, so I go to the Oak Table Café. My favorite thing to order is the apple pancake.

Another place you can go visit that has a lot of history is the Dungeness Creamery where they serve the most delicious ice cream. I get to see the baby calves and check out their gift ship. It’s now one of the last local dairy farms, although Sequim used to be the dairy capital form the 1920s and 1930s.

Enjoy your day in Sequim while you visit all my favorite places!

Essay:

Sequim is my favorite place on earth. There are pretty mountains, beaches, hiking trails, and parks. I also like shopping and the food. I like visiting the farms to pet the cows and smelling the flowers is a lot of fun.

My family and I love to drive in the mountains and hike. We find mushrooms, pick berries, and see deer.

The beaches are my favorite. You can swim, build sand castles, relax, and catch crabs. Sequim has lots of fun parks. The best ones are Carrie Blake Park, Railroad Bridge Park, and Robin Hill.

Girls’ days are filled with fun shopping and yummy food. Going to Reddog and getting a milkshake before we go to Full Moon Candle Co. is fun. The best places to eat are Salty Girls, Applebee’s, and Oasis and that’s why Sequim is the best.

Essay:

In Sequim, there are many things to see, do, and explore! I have so many ideas for you to try. Below are some of my favorites. If you travel to Sequim, be sure to try some of them. I hope you will love my town as much as I do!

There are lots of things to see in Sequim that you may like! Even though our Granary building is pretty old, it’s a very cool building in Sequim! I recently visited it, and got a tour. I learned that it has been used for several different businesses. Now it is being renovated into a coffee shop, restaurant, and hotel! It was built in the 1920s and is a time capsule of Sequim.

Since we’re a small town, l love running into my friends and family. Seeing my family so often makes me happy. Lastly, a trip to the lavender fields during the lavender festival is a beautiful sight to see, especially while sipping lavender lemonade!

We have so many fun things to do in Sequim! One thing I like to do is eat at our local restaurants. Chaos Coffee bagels are super, super good to eat for breakfast! I love to go to the Mariner Café for lunch to eat chicken tenders with fries and ranch.  And for dinner I like going to Double Eagle and having their hamburger sliders. My favorite playground to go to with my friends is The Gathering Place on Brown Road. At the end of the day, I like to visit my dad at the Agnew store for a candy or a snack, it is a fun store to visit!

When you go out to explore in Sequim there is no telling what you’ll find. I like going to Port Williams beach to explore, and once I found a cave in the cliffside! I like to visit my grandparents in Gardiner, too. It’s fun to run around in their big yard and check out their garden. There is also a fun park to explore at the Jamestown Campus on Sequim Bay when I’m

in Gardiner!

In conclusion, I hope you visit Sequim Soon and see all the exciting things we have to offer. From the restaurants to the parks to the water, Sequim makes me feel at home and happy. Sequim is special to me because we have so much to see and do and I can explore it all with my family!

I enjoy travel and seeing new places; I hope to see all the Disney Parks in the world and recently visited Fiji. I play basketball, as well as indoor and outdoor soccer with Sequim Junior Soccer. I like playing sports because they are fun, keep me healthy, and I can make new friends. When I grow up, I want to be a teacher, daycare provider, or a referee.

Essay:

Let’s Go Sequimming

When visiting Sequim, go to the Game Farm, see bears, elk, and Prairie Dogs, and feed them.

Another place is Sweet Spot, the Frozen yogurt shop. Pick your favorite flavors and toppings. I get blackberry, chocolate, vanilla, cheesecake, and coffee flavors. For toppings I would get popping boba’s, cheesecake squares, and blue and white sharks. Inside is chalkboard you can draw on.

Carrie Blake Park is fun, because I can play games with friends and use monkey bars. I can also feed ducks in the pond. There are pickleball courts, if sunny, there are many people playing. I often run into friends when there.

Another activity is biking the Discovery trail, which connects many great places. Make sure to visit John Wayne Marina and paddle board or kayak to see flounder, starfish, and sea cucumbers.

I believe Sequim is special because of activities like Lavender Festival and the Irrigation Festival.

These Honored Pioneers are selected by the Sequim Pioneer Association Committee. The Honored Pioneers are…

2026 Honored Pioneer

Beverly McInnes

Beverly McInnes is truly a daughter of Sequim with the first McInnes moving to Dungeness in 1864. Raised on her family’s Jamestown Road farm, she was driving tractors and hay trucks before most kids were riding bicycles — earning a dollar an hour and keeping steady so the crew didn’t tumble off the back. She remembers riding in the Irrigation Festival kiddies’ parade with dolls tucked into crepe-papered buggies and watching neighbors line the route. Today, as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Beverly represents generations of hard work, family, and the joyful reunions that make this festival so special.

2026 Honored Pioneer

Lou Pinnell

Lou Pinnell has called Sequim home his entire life, growing up on 3rd Avenue when the town had just one stoplight and neighbors shared harvests and hard work. As a boy, he milked cows, hiked the mountains as a Boy Scout, and once rode in the Irrigation Festival parade dressed as a pirate — tossing candy and later coming home with a box of real carnival ducks. A sawmill worker, devoted father, grandfather, and great- grandfather, Lou represents generations of steady work, strong family ties, and joyful small-town memories that continue to define our valley.

2026 Honored Pioneer

Lyle Brown

Lyle Brown has called Sequim home for nearly 80 years, arriving in 1946 when the town had fewer than 1,000 residents and dairy farms stretched in every direction. An identical twin, Navy veteran, devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Lyle grew up watching the Irrigation Festival parade from Bell Street and rarely missed a year. From small-town dances to lifelong friendships, Lyle’s story reflects the humor, heart, and community spirit that continue to bring Sequim together each spring.

2026 Honored Pioneer

Merle Holden

Merle Holden’s roots in the Sequim Valley run deep — woven through family, farming, and the very water that made this land flourish. Raised in Jamestown when Sequim had just one stoplight, Merle bucked hay bales in the summer, fished the creeks all day, and marched in the Irrigation Festival parade with his high school football team. A Navy veteran, devoted family man, and proud descendant of Chief Chetzemoka, Merle represents generations of hustle, heart, and community spirit that continue to shape our valley today.

2026 Button Design Winner, Iris Carlquist-Bundy

Iris is 9 years old and attends school at Olympic Peninsula Academy. She lives with her parents, Amy and Emily on a five-acre hobby farm that includes two dogs, two cats, two roosters, four goats, and a leopard gecko. Her brother, Aidan, is a Sequim High School senior this year!

Iris is an artist above all else. She spends much of her time crafting using cardboard, wood, pencils, dried-out markers, paper, yarn, and whatever else might be around. She enjoys being in nature and finding inspiration for her art from local beaches and forests.

When contemplating her idea for the Sequim Irrigation Festival button, she remembered having watched a video of an octopus climbing around a jar and thought to herself that the jar could represent the Dungeness Spit Lighthouse. Iris is honored to have been chosen for this year’s button design and is proud to be a part of Sequim’s 2026 Irrigation Festival!
