Two contests for the design of festival artwork are held each year. The first contest is for the logo design to be used on festival lapel pins, posters, float designs, programs, website, advertising, the royalty pageant, the festival events and more. The Logo Design contest is complete and a winning design selected. The second contest is for the design to be used on the Festival buttons. The festival button contest starts in October and will be open to elementary school children in the Sequim school district. More information about this is below. 2012 Logo Design ContestDuring the summer each year the Irrigation Festival holds a contest for the design for the next year's logo. The selected logo design will be one that best conveys the theme for 2012, "117 & Still Growin' Green". The winning logo design will be carried out in collectible festival lapel pins, posters, float design, programs, advertising, the royalty pageant, the festival events and more. This logo represents the festival at all events and on festival materials. We are very pleased to announce that a design by Laura Friedkin was selected as the design for the 2012 festival. We appreciate all the artists who submitted designs. We had a lot of great designs to choose from. Laura was also the winner of the 2009 and 2011 festival logo designs. The artwork is being finalized and will be available by November when we start the planning efforts for the 2012 festival. 2012 Button Design ContestAt the beginning of each school year the Irrigation Festival holds a contest for the design for the next year's festival button. The selected logo will be used on 2012 festival buttons that will be sold by area 5th graders in late March. This year's button design contest winner is Melody Workman, a 5th grader from Mrs. Parks class at Helen Haller Elementary School. Congratulations Melody! Melody's artwork is being finalized and will be available in January. We had a record number of entries this year - over 290 - from both Helen Haller and Greywolf Elementary schools. The involvement by the principals and teachers at both these schools was fantastic. Theme: 117 & Still Growin' GreenWhen the settlers in the late 1800’s created the irrigation system, it allowed the clear blue water cascading down the majestic mountains to flow across the Dungeness valley, bringing abundance, fertile fields, and lush green crops. Irrigation devices lined the landscape, rolling across the fields to distribute water to the parched land. Soon tractors could be seen working the fields and harvesting the crops. Hay bales dotted the valley. Crops thrived and farms prospered, making Sequim the agricultural marketplace of the peninsula. Agriculture continues to be a vital part of the local identity. Ideas for implementing the theme in a logo include incorporating blue water and green fields, colorful crops, hay bales, farm implements, irrigation devices and farmers. |
