Inspired by her brothers, Melissa has set ambitious goals. They showed her that you can “dream big, work hard and forge your own path”. She plans to become an attorney and work in international law with the U.S. Navy JAG Corps. “My dream is to impact the world in a positive way, and law is the means by which I hope to do that.”
Her parents, Burton and Caity Karapostoles, have been very encouraging and supportive of Melissa, a 16 year old sophomore at Sequim High School. Her involvement in school, community and political interests spans a wide array of activities. She participates in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) as the current Historian, is a member of Soroptimist International’s “Women in Networks” program, and acts as a liaison between Soroptimist and her sophomore class.
Outside of school she is one of two student representatives on the Sequim Education Foundation’s board of directors. She is an appointee of the Washington State Legislative Youth Advisory Council, a group of twenty-two students who act as the voice of Washington Youth in the legislature. She enjoys being involved in our political system and worked as a page in the 2007 state House of Representatives. In her free time Melissa enjoys backpacking, bicycling, reading (historical fiction mostly), and writing poems.
As a member of the 2008 Sequim Irrigation Festival Royalty Court, Melissa sees an opportunity to meet new people, explore new opportunities, go outside her comfort zone and travel.
